Clara Porter

Founder, Clara Porter has over 20 years of experience in the field of violence prevention. She holds a Masters of Social Work, is certified in empowerment self-defense (ESD) with both the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation and Center for Antiviolence Education, as well as in advanced trauma first aide.
In recent years Porter has been engaged in translating ESD approaches to the work environment, engaging organizations in identifying the barriers that exist to a safe and fulfilling workplace and crafting health-promoting solutions. With the rise in identity-based harassment following the 2016 election and increased awareness of gender-based harassment in the workplace, Clara and her team have greatly expanded their work in Active Bystander Intervention and Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response. The team has worked closely with non profit organizations, colleges and universities, HR associations, and business in Maine and New England as well as presenting at regional and national conferences.

During his career, Tom has propelled growth in several early and middle stage start-up companies resulting in acquisitions that provided multi-million dollar returns for investors. In the past 10 years Tom has lead two Dallas based human resources software companies, HRsmart and Aquire Solutions, to triple digit growth and successful acquisitions by larger industry players. Prior to that Tom held senior level executive positions at Citrix Systems, Quantum Corporation, and Adobe Systems.
Tom is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science.

The Jackson Laboratory
The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution. Thomas P. Ellis oversees the human resources and safety functions for the Laboratory.
Ellis joined JAX in 2015 as director of total rewards and human resources systems. Immediately, he helped to implement several significant compensation initiatives and, more recently, led the design of the Laboratory’s health care and retirement plans.
Ellis has more than 10 years of experience leading various human resources functions for nonprofit organizations. He previously served as director of compensation for Delhaize America and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, compensation manager at MaineHealth/Maine Medical Center, and led various operational teams at MBNA America Inc.
Ellis received a BS in Business Administration from the University of Maine and an MBA from Thomas College. He is a resident of Bar Harbor and currently contributes to his local community by serving as the Finance Committee Chair of the board of trustees of the Healthcare Purchaser Alliance of Maine.
