Governor Paul LePageGovernor Paul LePage

A business leader who served his community as mayor, Paul LePage decided to run for Governor believing the approach that had succeeded throughout his business career and in Waterville could work for all of Maine.

He entered a seven-way primary contest for the Republican Nomination for Governor with very little name recognition among the party faithful. Event by event, Governor LePage won over converts with his message of personal success and his fiscally conservative principles. Despite being outspent ten-to-one by his nearest primary opponent, the Governor went on to a resounding victory in the seven-person primary.

During the five-way General Election, Governor LePage continued to talk about his experience in creating jobs and his commitment to putting people before politics in Maine. Governor LePage rode that truthful message to victory on November 2, 2010.

Paul LePage was sworn in as Maine Governor on Wednesday, January 5, 2011.

Mike Michaud
Democrat

Being a Mainer is about more than where you were born. It’s a way of life that shapes every person lucky enough to call Maine home. Maine’s values have molded my character and driven me to serve the people of this state since I was a young man working at the Great Northern Paper Mill in my hometown of East Millinocket.

As the former Senate President in the Maine Legislature, I presided over a chamber that was evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Most people thought the partisan split would prevent us from getting anything done. But by working together in a civil, respectful manner, listening to one another, and putting policy ahead of politics, we were able to forge agreements on key legislation and reach a balanced budget that both sides could be proud of.

Throughout my career I’ve proven that you can stay true to what you believe in while respecting the views of others and working together to get things done; whether it’s fighting to protect American jobs and promote Maine business, working to ensure affordable health care for all Mainers, advocating for increased funding for quality education, or protecting our environment.

That’s the kind of leadership the people of Maine deserve, and I will never lose sight of the Maine values this state has instilled in me since the day I was born.
