From HR to Legislature

Download Susan’s Audio

Susan worked in the Human Resources field for over 20 years after earning her Master’s degree in Human Resources Administration in 1990. After running for the State legislature, she became fascinated by the political world, in particular the operations of Maine state government.

In 2010, she was named the Legislative Aide for the state’s then-Speaker of the House. Late the following year, she joined the Maine Department of Labor as Director of Legislative Affairs. In that role, Susan serves as the Department’s liaison with the Maine Legislature and congressional delegation. She prepares legislation and testimony, testifies before legislative committees, serves as the Department’s Rulemaking Liaison, and coordinates resolution of constituent issues for legislators. Susan started her career in college admissions, interning for her alma mater, Wilkes University, and then working professionally at Widener University in Wilmington, DE.

Her extensive travel for those positions provided the foundation for her role at the Vanguard Group, where she traveled nationwide discussing financial products for employee’s retirement plan options. After thousands of miles and hundreds of flights, Susan transitioned to a Human Resources position at the Vanguard Group, where she worked as a Corporate Trainer before deciding to work full time on her Master’s degree. After graduating – and getting married – Susan became the first Human Resources Manager at Sathers, a brand new candy and food products company in Pennsylvania.

Upon moving to Maine in 1994, she worked in several HR leadership roles at Mid Coast Health Services in Brunswick, Maine. After her first run for the Maine Legislature in 2006, Susan started a cable television show called In My Backyard where she interviewed state and local leaders so citizens could see how legislative decisions made in Augusta affect their lives every day. The show aired on Bath Community Television for two seasons.

Susan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Wilkes University, as well as a Master’s degree in Human Resources Administration from the University of Scranton. She is a graduate of Leadership Wilkes-Barre in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and Midcoast Maine Leadership Institute in Brunswick, Maine. While working in healthcare, she was a member of the Maine Society for Healthcare Human Resources Association, and she has served on the boards of the American Red Cross, Midcoast Maine Leadership Institute, and The Plant Home.
